North Conway's Streetscape Project

The photograph above has been digitally altered to show what North Conway would have looked like after one of the original components of the project was completed.  Part of the project was to include removing the cross wires that go from one side of Route 16 to the other.  The utility poles will remain on each side of the street with the wires running parallel to the street.  The process of removing the cross wires was voted against after the engineering design showed that 16 of the 29 new utility poles would require conduit that would not be aesthetically pleasing and also encroach upon the sidewalk affecting pedestrian traffic and snow removal.

Description of the Project:

The roads in the Village of North Conway are to be reconstructed to provide for new water main pipes. This work is part of Phase 5B of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation by-pass construction project. The sidewalks in the Village are scheduled to be replaced with concrete as part of this work from River Road to Artist Falls Road.

We have entered into a public private partnership with the Town of Conway and NH DOT to enhance the streetscape of the Village of North Conway.

The Streetscape Project includes:

  • Install Brick Sidewalks and Granite Pavers, Brick up to Buildings. Sidewalks will be brick from Artists Falls to Pine Street .
  • Add brick imprinted crosswalks within the North Conway Village district for safety.
  • Add historical lighting on side streets; Pine, Depot, Grove, Seavey, Kearsarge and Mechanic where poles exist now.
  • Brick Kearsarge Street Sidewalks.
  • Create a sidewalk on Pine Street in concrete from Route 16 to corner.  Add freestanding historical poles and lights on Pine Street where no poles exist now.
  • Replace and upgrade all trash receptacles and recycling containers.
  • Install aesthetic improvements such as upgraded benches.
  • Upgrade electrical systems in Schouler Park to fit the needs and safety of the public and add irrigation to Schouler Park .
  • Landscape improvements resulting from Sidewalk Construction.

Some of the items within the project will be completed in 2006 such as the brick sidewalks on Route 16; some others will be scheduled for 2007 and 2008 based on the Town of Conway's work load.  The MWVPA is very excited to have the Selectmen's approval and look forward to seeing a fresh new look for North Conway Village .
